Will someone please explain to me why There is so much support for Israel in the United States?

Why does the 2.2% of the US population (jewish in America) have such power in that they get our country to give close to 3 billion dollars in foreign aid a year to Israel--much more than any country in the world?? I dont think the average American gives two hoots about the State of Israel especially at a time when Domestic economy could use that money so well here. I realize that as victors of WW2 we established the state of Israel (jewish original homeland) to give the persecuted jews a place of their own--but to me, we shood have put them in Alaska or some island in pacific that they would not be so totally surrounded by their enemies and need our continued protection. This is one of the main reasons for deep hatred towards America from the Arab World..Why do we continue to do this rather than admit we made a mistake??????
